Who this is for
Intermediate to advanced learners who want to go deeper than classroom Portuguese. You love Brazil, you love music, and you want to understand what Brazilians are actually saying — and feeling — when they sing.
How to use this playbook
Work through the episodes in order — they build on each other. Or jump to the artist or topic that excites you most. Either way works. Each episode has a full annotated worksheet to help you study the vocabulary and cultural context.
Part 1 — The Foundation
Understanding Brazilian Music
Before diving into individual artists, these three episodes give you the full picture — where Brazilian music comes from, why it matters, and how it connects to the language and soul of Brazil.
Episode 1 — Brazilian Music I: Listen to the Music
Season 1, Episode 17
Published: January 2017
The episode that started it all. Alexia and Foster introduce the idea of using music as a language learning tool and explain why Brazilian music is so uniquely suited to this. You'll learn about the African roots of Brazilian rhythm, why samba was once considered the music of outcasts, and how mĂşsica can mean both music in general and a specific song.
Key vocabulary: música · ritmo · influência · marginalidade · erudito
Cultural note: The deep connection between samba and Afro-Brazilian identity is essential context for everything that follows in this playbook.
Episode 2 — Brazilian Music II: Samba Never Dies
Season 1, Episode 18
Published: January 2017
Samba is the heartbeat of Brazilian music — and this episode explains why it keeps coming back. Alexia describes samba's cycles: how it rises and falls but never disappears, como o mar — like the ocean with its waves. You'll also pick up some of the most useful colloquial expressions in Brazilian Portuguese, including how cara works in everyday speech.
Key vocabulary: os caras · batida · ondas · temporada · influência
Cultural note: Samba is inseparable from Carnaval — but it's so much more than a Carnaval song. This episode shows you why.
Episode 3 — Brazilian Music III: The Brazilian Soul
Season 1, Episode 19
Published: February 2017
The third part of the original trilogy dives into bossa nova — the movement that took Brazilian music to the world — and the artists behind it. Tim Maia appears here, described simply as: Tim Maia é tudo. You'll begin to see how Brazilian music reflects the Brazilian soul: emotional, complex, and impossible to resist.
Key vocabulary: trampolim · sĂntese · intĂ©rprete · arranjo · movimento
Cultural note: Bossa nova was the bridge between traditional Brazilian music and international recognition. Understanding it unlocks everything else.
Part 2 — Guest Conversations
Music Through Brazilian Eyes
These episodes bring in outside voices — a music expert, a language teacher — to go deeper into specific styles and movements.
Episode 4 — Brazilian Music with Renato (Part 1)
Season 2, Episode 22
Published: October 2017
Renato joins Alexia and Foster for a wide-ranging conversation about Brazilian musical styles. You'll encounter sertanejo — Brazilian country music — and understand why the range of Brazilian music is so much broader than most foreigners realize. One of the richest vocabulary episodes in the entire archive.
Key vocabulary: sertanejo · choro · violão · pandeiro · cavaquinho · músicas infantis
Cultural note: The cavaquinho — a small stringed instrument that looks like a ukulele but sounds completely different — is central to many styles of Brazilian music.
Episode 5 — Brazilian Music with Renato (Part 2)
Season 2, Episode 23
Published: October 2017
The conversation continues, going deep into JoĂŁo Gilberto and the birth of bossa nova. Renato makes a compelling case for Gilberto as a sĂntese — a synthesis of everything that came before. If you want to understand why Brazilians revere certain artists the way they do, this episode is essential.
Key vocabulary: sĂntese · LP · gravar · arranjo · sagrado
Cultural note: JoĂŁo Gilberto's 1959 recording of Chega de Saudade is considered the founding document of bossa nova.
Part 3 — The Artists
Deep Dives into Brazil's Greatest Musicians
Carioca Connection has dedicated full episodes to some of Brazil's most important musicians. Each one is a masterclass in both Portuguese and cultural context.
Episode 6 — Caetano Veloso
Season 2, Episode 16
Published: September 2017
One of Brazil's most beloved and controversial artists. This episode gives you the full Caetano — his personality, his politics, his place in Brazilian culture. Alexia's storytelling here is some of her best: the image of Caetano buying bread in Leblon is a moment CC listeners still talk about.
Key vocabulary: controverso · tropicalismo · artista · manchete · saudades
Cultural note: Caetano was exiled during Brazil's military dictatorship. His music carries that history in every note.
Episode 7 — Caetano Veloso: Oração ao Tempo (Song Analysis)
Season 7, Episode 36
Published: March 2022
A rare solo episode: Foster analyzes one of Caetano's most profound songs, Oração ao Tempo, line by line in Portuguese. This is one of the most linguistically rich episodes in the entire archive — a meditation on time, mortality, and the limits of human perception, delivered through a song.
Key vocabulary: oração · tempo · término · perceber · inventivo
đź’ˇ Study tip: Listen to the song before and after the episode. The difference in comprehension will surprise you.
Episode 8 — Cartola
Season 3, Episode 17
Published: February 2018
Cartola is the patron saint of samba — and this episode tells his story with the reverence it deserves. From the Morro da Mangueira to the history of Rio's samba schools, this is one of the most culturally dense episodes Carioca Connection has produced. Sambista enters your vocabulary here and never leaves.
Key vocabulary: sambista · morro · escola de samba · marginalidade · reconhecimento
Cultural note: Mangueira is one of the oldest and most storied samba schools in Rio. Understanding Cartola means understanding Mangueira.
Episode 9 — Elis Regina
Season 3, Episode 28
Published: May 2018
The greatest voice in Brazilian music history. Alexia's affection for Elis is evident throughout, and you'll understand why by the end. The episode traces her journey from the south of Brazil to São Paulo to Rio — and how her accent shifted with each move, detectable even in how she sang.
Key vocabulary: intérprete · sotaque · trajetória · reconhecimento · canção
Cultural note: Elis Regina died at 36. What she left behind remains unmatched in Brazilian music.
Episodes 10 & 11 — Chico Buarque: A Dois-Parte Deep Dive
Season 4, Episodes 7 & 8
Published: March 2019
Chico Buarque is a poet who writes songs. Apesar de Você was written during the military dictatorship — disguised as a love song, it was actually a direct attack on the regime (the military initially approved it, then realized their mistake — by then it was already a hit). Vai Passar is its counterpart: where the first is angry, the second is hopeful. Together they form a complete portrait of Chico and of Brazil's relationship with music and politics.
Key vocabulary: ditadura · censura · metáfora · duplo sentido · esperança · superação
đź’ˇ Study tip: Listen to both episodes back to back. The contrast between the two songs tells the whole story of Brazil in that era.
Episode 12 — João Gilberto
Season 4, Episode 14
Published: April 2019
A dedicated episode for the father of bossa nova. João Gilberto's influence on Brazilian music — and on music worldwide — is impossible to overstate. This episode gives you the history, the personality, and the vocabulary to talk about him the way a Brazilian would.
Key vocabulary: bossa nova · arranjo · violĂŁo · fundador · sĂntese · saudade
Cultural note: JoĂŁo Gilberto was famously reclusive. The stories about him are as legendary as the music itself.
Episodes 13 & 14 — Wilson Simonal: Rise and Fall
Season 4, Episodes 38 & 39
Published: October 2019
Wilson Simonal was one of Brazil's biggest stars — and one of its most tragic figures. Part one introduces him at the height of his powers: charismatic, innovative, beloved, the inventor of a style fusing samba with American soul. Part two tells the fall: Simonal was accused of collaborating with the military dictatorship, informing on colleagues including Gilberto Gil and Caetano Veloso. Whether the accusation was fully accurate remains contested. These two episodes are as much about Brazilian history as about music.
Key vocabulary: charme · talento · delatar · acusação · regime · reputação
Cultural note: Simonal's story became a celebrated documentary: Ninguém Sabe o Duro que Dei — worth watching after these episodes.
Episode 15 — Rubel
Season 3, Episode 18
Published: February 2018
A contemporary voice. Rubel is one of the most beloved young Brazilian musicians working today — a gateway into modern Brazilian music and how the tradition continues and evolves. A perfect counterpoint to the classic artists that dominate most of this playbook.
Key vocabulary: cantor · compositor · contemporâneo · geração · estilo
Cultural note: Rubel's music sits at the intersection of MPB and Brazilian folk. He's a gateway to a whole generation of young artists.
Episode 16 — Tim Bernardes
Season 8, Episode 10
Published: March 2023
Another contemporary: Tim Bernardes (full name Martim Bernardes Pereira) is one of the most critically acclaimed Brazilian musicians of his generation. This episode is rich in vocabulary about music criticism and artistic identity — and a reminder that Brazilian music is very much alive.
Key vocabulary: cantor · produtor · aclamado · geração · identidade artĂstica
đź’ˇ Study tip: Search for Tim Bernardes on Spotify after listening. His music rewards close attention to the lyrics.
Bonus Episode
Episode 17 — Carnaval
Season 2, Episode 4
Published: June 2017
You can't understand Brazilian music without understanding Carnaval. This episode is the essential cultural primer — what Carnaval actually is, how it works, why the world goes to Rio for it, and what it means to Brazilians. Not just a party. A complex cultural institution with deep roots in Afro-Brazilian religion, politics, and community.
Key vocabulary: bloco · escola de samba · marchinha · desfile · fantasia
