Season 5
SEASON 5 HAS BEEN A CRAZY RIDE.

After a few hiccups, a global pandemic, and 7 months physically apart — we finally finished Season 5 of Carioca Connection! In this season we focus on getting Foster’s Portuguese back into shape. After months of not speaking much Portuguese, he’s reunited with Alexia in Portugal, trying to understand a completely different accent, struggling with the language barrier and masks, so it’s been really fun and challenging for him. Throughout the season we talk about the pandemic, our new puppy, vocabulary about animals, the art of recovering a language, and much more!

“I’ve been listening to these two for a while now and honestly they are the soundtrack to my café da manhãs everyday! A great way to expand your vocabulary and improve your accent! So much fun, very natural flow, and a great diversity of topics!”

Season 4
SEASON 4 IS ALL ABOUT BRAZIL AND ITS CULTURE.

Season 4 was definitely fun to record. 2019 was a crazy year in Brazil and this season of the podcast reflects that. We started Season 4 in March of 2019, and because of the unpredictable nature of international relationships, we finished just before the New Year. We cover a lot of ground in this season, ranging from Fernando de Noronha, yoga, technology, aliens, lots of Brazilian music, social media in Brazil, and much more.
Most listened episode from Season 4:
“As an English speaker I benefit from listening to both Foster and Alexia speak. Foster’s accent is easier for me, but the goal is to be able to understand native speakers, so I love being able to experience both in one short episode. I read the transcript and listen to one episode a day. I love picking up on the colloquialisms so when I go back to Brazil I will be able to speak and interact naturally with people. Thanks Foster & Alexia!”

Season 3
SEASON 3 was recorded while traveling to different countries!

Remember 2018? That seems like so long ago. In the beginning of the year, we talked about the World Cup and some of our adventures traveling throughout the US. We cover a lot of language related topics like nasal vowels and difficult sounds in Portuguese. And in the middle of the season we pack up our things and go on a crazy adventure in Spain and Portugal. Listening to this season now provides a wonderful escape from the weight of 2020.
Most listened episode from Season 3:
“I’ve been listening to Carioca Connection for one and a half years—since I began my Portuguese-learning journey, and I absolutely love listening to their podcast. My understanding of the spoken language has expanded through hearing their fun and interesting conversations. The best part is how listening to this podcast has played a role in how I’ve been able to deepen my relationships with my Brazilian friends here in the U.S. As a language teacher who comes from a bilingual upbringing, I’ve also appreciated Alexia and Foster’s eye to linguistics and language acquisition. I’ve fallen more and more in love with the music, history, and culture of Brazil through their thorough and broad topics. I can’t wait to keep training my ear to speak with the unique Carioca “sotaque” (my favorite accent from Brazil—the Rio accent), and to keep opening my heart to more and more knowledge about the people and culture of Brasil through Carioca Connection. I hope they record a thousand more seasons 😉 Muito obrigada Alexia e Foster. Tudo de bom para vocês!”

Season 2
This season was recorded all throughout the Americas.

Season 2 is where Carioca Connection started to hit its stride. We recorded this season all throughout the Americas – Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Uruguay, and the United States. The topics of this season are as diverse as the places we recorded them. We talk a lot about travel, Brazilian music and culture. Some really interesting guests come on the show. And of course, the season is full of fascinating real-life Brazilian Portuguese.
Most listened episode from Season 2:
“Try this approach. Alexia’s father Marco is really easy to understand. The conversations between Alexia and Foster are a lot of fun and it is worth paying for the transcripts.”

Season 1
where it all began.

This is where it all began. Foster recently moved to Rio after graduate school and wanted to start a podcast. Alexia graciously accepted to be his guinea pig. The rest is history. The idea of Carioca Connection from the beginning was to provide high-quality Portuguese resources through natural conversations. Season 1 proved that our idea was not so crazy after all. Although we were still learning the ins and outs of podcasts, Season 1 still remains one of our listeners’ favorites.
Most listened episode from Season 1:
“I’ve tried every Portuguese resource under the sun, and these podcasts are by far my favorite. The conversations keep me company on my commute, and then I can review the worksheets when I get home. It almost feels like I’m back in Rio!”
