Presente do indicativo is how we call the simple present in Portuguese.
When to use
Presente do Indicativo is a verb tense used to speak of an action that occurs at the moment of speech. Thus, it allows us to situate the present tense indicating a habitual action, a truth or characteristics of the subject.
How is it different from English?
It works exactly as Simple Present in English. In Brazilian Portuguese, people tend to use more the gerund than simple present in day to day conversations we don’t use it as often as gerund (-ing) in regular conversations.
GERUND
I am walking → Eu estou andando
We are running → Nós estamos correndo
She's smiling → Ela está sorrindo
SIMPLE PRESENT
I walk → Eu ando
We run → Nós corremos
She smiles → Ela sorri
